A hard lesson learned

Ellie and Kara learned a hard lesson this week about responsibility. We were getting our books ready to take back to the library and the girls discovered that they couldn't find one of the DVDs that they checked out from the library. So we completely cleaned the family in hope that it would show up. No such luck. So the girls now have to split the cost of the movie. I made them go up to the counter at the library and explain that they lost the movie. The librarian estimates it will cost $26 to replace it.

When I told the girls that they would have to pay for the replacement, they were crushed, especially Ellie. She doesn't spend her money foolishly and always thinks long and hard about what she is buying before she actually buys it. She was hoping to buy a camera with the money she has saved but since she now has to pay for half of the movie, she no longer has enough for the camera. She cried for quite awhile. Kara, on the other hand, was sad for a little while but got over it quite quickly. She isn't nearly attached to her money as Ellie is. I also told them that they aren't allowed to get movies from the library for awhile and that when they watch movies, they must put them back in the case and back on the shelf.

On the bright side, at least the family room got cleaned (I've been meaning to get it done for about 3 weeks).
